The recipient of the John Davis Whelchel, Jr MD Resident Award is a third-year surgery resident with a passion for surgery and demonstration of a strong surgical skill set. This individual must participate and show a drive towards research that advances a surgical field of focus in his/her career path. As a third-year resident, the recipient should already demonstrate the refining qualities of a mentor along with an unwavering dedication and compassion for his/her patients.
The recipient of the John Davis Whelchel, Jr MD Faculty Award should embody a young faculty surgeon who shows strong potential as a leader in a specific field of surgery. This faculty member should demonstrate accomplishment in areas of research that advance an area of surgical practice and/or improve patient outcomes or access to care. Despite all other accomplishments, this recipient should embody the core characteristics remembered most by Dr. John D. Whelchel: his surgical expertise, inspiring mentorship, and compassionate bedside manner.

Ley and Hedrick, both Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholars, serve as co-directors of the IMMCG at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.The Center dramatically expands research to better harness the power of the immune system to prevent and treat disease.
